EVENT: Deep Fried / March 13 / Saguijo March 11, 2009

It’s Deep Fried March Edition. The last one held at Route 196 was a tad disappointing in terms of attendance. For some reason though, the dance floor never empties at DF @ Route 196 no matter how few people show up. Meanwhile even if a boatload of folks come to DF @ Saguijo, it never fails that there will be a few moments when the dance floor clears. Maybe this is due to Saguijo having a big outdoor space where people can chill and smoke, but it’s still a bit strange.

This month sees the regular duo of Toti D. and Cyril Yarisantos on the decks while alternating acts Pasta Groove and Caliph8 open up the night with slower tempo funky numbers.

Note: As of now, there won’t be a Skeletal Outfit set at the next Deep Fried due to hardware technical difficulties. Hopefully this will be remedied soon!

RANT: When is a Remix not a Remix? February 14, 2009

I came across Sebastien Leger’s latest release called The People. After only a few seconds of sampling the track through Beatport, I of course immediately recognized the riff and vocal samples from Marilyn Manson’s The Beautiful People. So I’m just really curious as to why Sebastien Leger’s track wasn’t released as “Marilyn Manson – The Beautiful People [Sebastien Leger Remix]. I’d understand if only the vocal sample was used then it wouldn’t constitute as a remix but to have the distinct main riff as the hook and similar drum rhythm as well just screams plagiarism to me. I’m sure someone out there can explain the niceties of official remixes to me though, right?

EVENT: Deep Fried / Feb 7 / Route 196 February 3, 2009

Time once again for another Deep Fried event. The turn out was pretty good for the last one held at Saguijo so here’s hoping even more will make it this month. The previous one at Route was also great as the place was almost packed and the bodies were moving all throughout the night and the almost pitch dark setting was indeed fitting.

The usual suspects Toti D. and Cyril Yarisantos will man the decks for the night while yours truly, The Skeletal Outfit will open the night with some funky breaks and minimal tech.

The Skeletal Outfit – Dysfunction January 15, 2009

Here is a glitchy Electro House track I finished a few months ago. Heavily influenced by Zimbardo. I played this out for the first time at the last Deep Fried (Dec 13) and it went down really well considering Electro House isn’t the genre of choice at the event. Some final tweaks are in order but here she is anyway.

EVENT: Deep Fried / Jan 17 / Saguijo, Makati January 13, 2009

Deep frying time once again. The now regular techno/house night from Groove Nation will be alternating venues every month between Saguijo in Makati and Route 196 in Katipunan Extension. This January 17 will see the likes of Caliph8 and Pee Gee aka Pasta Groove opening up the night with more organic sounds. Residents Cyril Yarisantos and Toti D. will round out the festivities with their usual brand of tech-house and techno. If the last Deep Fried is anything to go by then this one will sure be another corker.

As a  shameless plug (hey it’s my bloody blog), yours truly, The Skeletal Outfit and Jim Ponce will team up once again for another opening set at the next Deep Fried at Route 196 on Feb 7.

REVIEW: Zapped!!! @ Attica Bar December 30, 2008

Disclaimer: Forget the fact that we were out to just have drinks at a nice bar with decent music. Forget the fact that the “we” in question were a bunch of 30-somethings and would feel old no matter where we’d end up. Most of all, forget the fact that this author is a music nazi and would be chin-stroking to any tune that was being played by any given DJ that night. 

Now that that’s out of the way, let me tell you about this event called Zapped!!! that was held Monday the 29th at Attica Lounge at A-Venue , Makati Avenue.

EVENT: Deep Fried / Dec 13 / Route 196 December 10, 2008

Just two weeks after most recent Deep Fried event at Saguijo, Groove Nation once again brings us quality tunes and righteous techno for the 3rd installment of Deep Fried. The venue this time goes a full 180 and heads to QC, and more specifically, Route 196 at Katipunan extension.

The new venue may mean unexpected things but one thing that will not change for sure is the delivery of good deep funky techy music courtesy of Toti D and special guests, yours truly, The Skeletal Outfit and Jim Ponce.

EVENT: Deep Fried / Nov 29 / Saguijo, Makati November 24, 2008

Its time for the second Deep Fried party! The last one was pretty good albeit scarce on people. I hate crowds but this event sure could have used some more bodies on the dance floor (female preferably). I think this party is going to coincide with the Trance Alliance whatever event so I’m glad all the trance people will be occupied elsewhere hehe. Once again Toti D and Benjie Lopez will man the decks for some proper deep/minimal/banging techno.

If you really like your techno and abhor the annoying commercial clubbing scene, do yourself a favor and get your butt to Saguijo on Saturday.

I’m still petitioning for Toti to move this event to Fridays so it can be called Deep Fried Days. harhar!

Like a lot of breaks producers, Groove Diggerz have developed a penchant for all things house. As much as I’d love to hear a trademark heavy funky breaks mix from these guys, this Chilled, Deep DJ mix is quite alright.
